Today MassChallenge invited startups, partners, and supporters from the London entrepreneurial ecosystem to celebrate diversity, inclusion, and entrepreneurship.
The umbrella EMPOWER@MassChallenge will hold a number of initiatives and create programming to promote these topics.
A significant number from the MassChallenge community gathered nice and early at the London Stock Exchange this morning. Despite the 7:30am start, the atmosphere was electric – it is not every day that you get the opportunity to open the London Stock Exchange.
Following the opening, Diane Perlman, CMO of MassChallenge, emphasised their belief in the uniform distribution of talent across all demographic lines. She also reiterated how important it is to tap into all forms of brain power. These sentiments demonstrate how embracing and supporting diversity is at the heart of MassChallenge’s core values.
Afterwards, Elena Sinel, a finalist from MassChallenge 2016 and the founder of Acorn Aspirations, inspired the audience with her moving personal story which influenced her decision to create a teen tech accelerator to bridge the digital skills gap. “Our core mission is to ensure young people leave schools better equipped with the skills that really matter and programming skills are an absolute must. We place a particular focus on giving girls and teenagers from underrepresented communities access to technology and entrepreneurship education”.
Next, our CTO Susan Standiford shared her passion for the topic. She recalled the amazement of one of the attendees after meeting a female CTO. “She told me she had met a female CTO yesterday and was surprised. Now she has met the second one here, just the day after and just could not believe it. Two female CTOs in two days – incredible! We need this to become a lot less mind-blowing and a lot more normal”
The event then concluded with an engaging networking reception.
